Thuystvreest 1745 Gable Stone, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Editorial Image

Pictured is a gable stone with a sailboat which has the inscriptions 1745 and Thuystvreest on the stern. Gable stones are carved and often colorfully painted stone tablets, which are set into the walls of buildings, usually at about 4 meters from the ground. They serve both to identify and embellish the building. Amsterdam has around 850 of these gable stones.
