It is located in the Schermer, the last great impolderment area in North Holland. An Archimedes` screw, also known by the name the Archimedean or pump, is a machine used for transferring water from a low-lying body of water into irrigation ditches. Water is pumped by turning a screw-shaped surface inside a pipe. Windmills attached to these Archimedean screws were used to reclaim land from the sea in the Netherlands, a function carried out today by electric pump stations.
