Cruise ship passengers line the bow deck for view of canal locks. The canal was opened to traffic on August 15, 1914, more than three decades after the first attempt to build the canal had begun. It remains the greatest engineering feat yet attempted.Three locks raise and lower passing vessels in the Panama Canal. The Gatun body of water is on the Atlantic side, and Pedro Miguel and Miraflores bodies of water are on the Pacific side.
