Cockspur Lighthouse on the Savannah River #140291362
Description
Cockspur Lighthouse is the smallest of the lighthouses located in Georgia standing only 46 feet tall. Originally built in 1839, with a height of only 25 feet. Cockspur was damaged by a hurricane in 1854 and rebuilt on the same foundation and at its current height. It was decommissioned June 1, 1909, as ships were using the wider and deeper North Channel. On August 14, 1958, control of the lighthouse was taken by the National Park Service. The light was relit on August 18, 2007, but it was not as navigational aid rather for the historical significance. While the upper part of the lighthouse has been restored, it is not open to the public.
