The Imperial Palace has four observation towers that stand in each of the corners of the palace wall. They are built both for defense and for decoration. The corner towers were built during the Ming Dynasty. Their height from the ground is 27.5 meters. That part of the towers, which stands above the wall, was made of a first-class tree nanmu. The overhangs of the roofs are bent to the top, which gives the towers a charming lightness.
