Description
Birch Polypore or Razor Strop Fungus - Fomitopsis betulina, growing on a fallen tree trunk of Silver Birch. Growing more or less exclusively on Birch Trees, being classed as an edible mushroom with a bitter taste. The velvety cut surface was used traditionally as a razor strop, hence its alternate common name. They have a smooth greyish-brown top with a cream coloured underside having many pores containing the fungal spores.
