In 1540, John III of Portugal ordered the construction of a new temple, based on a hermitage built during the 13th century by Gonçalo de Amarante. The construction of the church and the monastery ended up during the reign of Filipe II of Spain. On October 12th, 1683, the construction of the Balcony of the Kings begin.nnOutside the church, we can see the Balcony of the Kings, where are the representative statues of John II of Portugal, Sebastian of Portugal, Henrique I of Portugal and Filipe II of Spain.nOn the porch, are represented Our Lady of Rosario, Saint Pedro Martir, Gonçalo de Amarante, Saint Tomás, Saint Francisco and, over the door, Saint Paulo and Saint Pedro.nnInside the church, we found a pipe organ, the tomb of Gonçalo de Amarante, the sacristy with a painted coffered ceiling and an image of Gonçalo de Amarante and the main cloister with a centered font, creation of Mateus Lopes, built in between 1586 and 1606.
