Litmus Polyphemis or horseshoe crabs and Quiscalus more commonly called a Grackle on a Delaware Bay Beach. The primordial spawning ritual brings thousands of crabs up from the bay or ocean floor each year in May to lay eggs on the shore. Male fertilize the eggs. Shorebirds and native birds feast on the tiny green eggs.
