A view from the beach of the fortress and church in Cacela Velha. This fortress was built in the 16th and 17th centuries on the site of the original 10th century Muslim fortress. The Nossa Senhora da Assuncao Church dates from the 16th century but had major reconstruction in the 1700s. The picturesque village of Cacela Velha is located in the eastern Algarve and overlooks part of the Ria Formosa, not far from the Spanish border.
