The beautiful deep red flowers of the Agave Pelona are said to produce a sweet tasting mescal. This unique and rare species has toothless green leaves which have a narrow glossy appearance. The leaves grow in a rosette. In order to grow Agave Pelona plant, it has to be seeded for propagation. It is known to grow a spike which can reach heights of up to approximately 10 feet. At one point in its lifetime it should bloom. This blooming is known to be a rare occasion. When it finally does occur it is during the beginning of spring and also through summer at which time it can produce a six to ten foot spike that produces a beautiful encircling blossom of colorful reddish purple blooms. Historically, the plant parts were used to make a sweet tasting mescal, for their fibers, and for eating. Specifically the plants heart was eaten by roasting it. This agave makes for a unique ornamental and an attractive species when added to a desert garden. With its bell shaped, deep red and lavender colored flowers & buds. The color is striking and are said to have the color of wine which beautifully compliment the blues, purples and rich green of the stalk and buds. This species is native to the mountains southwest of Caborca Mexico and grows in a few isolated mountainous areas of the Sonoran Desert region. The Sonoran desert is located in and covers large parts of the Southwestern United States in Arizona and California. The Sonoran Desert additionally covers areas of Baja California Sur, Baja California and Northwestern Mexico.
