Former US Navy buildings abandoned and forgotten, 4. #151627312
Description
Treasure Island San Francisco is a completely man made island, built between 1936-37, initially for the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939. It was intended to then be used as an extension of San Francisco`s municipal airport, but with the United States entry into WW2 in 1941, the United States Navy took it over, and stayed through the ensuing wars. By 1991 this base was deemed no longer needed, and closed in 1997 with the city of San Francisco again finally taking it over, with the buildings being replaced by civilian housing. Only a dwindling number of the original navy buildings remain.
