The Venice Lagoon or Venetian Lagoon in Venetian dialect unaaguna de Venesia or ýaguna vèneta is a lagoon of the northern Adriatic Sea, along the central-northern and southern coasts of Veneto, in the Upper Adriatic. It occupies an area of ââ¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹approximately 550 kmò, of which 8% are occupied by land Venice itself and the many smaller islands; about 11% is permanently composed of water, or dredged channels, while about 80% are muddy tidal flats, salt-water marshes or artificial reclaimed troughs. The entire territory was included in 1987 in the list of world heritage sites by UNESCO.
