Description
The Royal Monastery of Oia is an old Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century, located in the province of Pontevedra, in the autonomous community of Galicia, Spain. It was declared of Cultural Interest or National Monument in 1931. Its origins appear surrounded by unknowns and news more legendary than historicals.a The first existing documentary news of relative reliability that tells us about a monastic life in Oia must be placed in the first third of the twelfth century, 4 towards the year 1137 , when King Alfonso VII makes various donations to the monastery. But when it is already possible to verify with certainty the origin of this abbey it is in 1149 date in which the monarch previously mentioned grants to the monks that lived there ââ¬ÅSUB REGULA BEATI BENEDICTIââ¬Â all the real possessions of the places of Mougás, Villadesuso and Pedornes.
