Konopiste is a historicist-style chateau near the town of Benesov in the Central Bohemian Region, 40 km southeast of Prague. It lies about 2 km west of the center of Benesov. Today it is known as the main and last seat of the successor to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand d Este and his Czech wife Zofie Chotkova, whose assassination in Sarajevo was an excuse to start the First World War. The site is now protected as a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic.It is state-owned and is open to the public.
