Church of San Giorgio, Portofino, Italy #157234335
Description
Pictured is the church of San Giorgio located atop a hill in Portofino, Italy. Inside are the relics of Saint George, the patron saint of Portofino. Saint George was decapitated by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in April 303. His headless body was buried in Lydda in Palestine. English crusaders later found the body and tried to bring it back to England, but ran into a severe storm in the Mediterranean. They swore that if they ever met landfall again they would leave the body there as an offering ââ¬â and the little harbour which finally offered them sanctuary was Portofino.
