The northern cardinal is also know as a redbird, common cardinal, and just cardinal. It is a midsized songbird with a distinctive crest. It has a mask on it`s face, black for males and gray for females. The male is territorial, marking his territory with song. In courtship the male feeds females seeds beak to beak. It is the state bird of OH, IN, IL, WV, VA, and NC. It is banned in the US as a cage bird.
