Wooden statue of the risen Christ, Church of Santa Margherita d`Antiochia in Vernazza, Liguria, Italy #158201375
Description
Pictured is a wooden statue of the risen Christ in the Church of Santa Margherita d`Antiochia. He is depicted with a puncture through his left hand and the sacred heart is seen on his chest. The Sacred Heart is often depicted in Christian art as a flaming heart shining with divine light, pierced by the lance-wound, encircled by the crown of thorns, surmounted by a cross, and bleeding. The church is located in the seaside village of Vernazza, near the main square of the town, Piazza Guglielmo Marconi. The first church on this site was built in the 11th century. The current church is mentioned for the first time in a document in 1318. It has had multiple renovations including a 19th century creation of access to the church from the square, through a door built in the apse area.
