Pictured are Genoa`s Porta Soprana, one of the few surviving gates from the so-called `Barbarossa walls` built between 1155 and 1159. It is also known as Porta Sant`Andrea and is a symbol of the proud Republic of Genoa, a republic that enjoyed seven centuries of freedom from 1096 to 1815. The red cross on a white background is the falg of the Comune of Genoa.
