Description

The Cactaceae family groups succulent and largely thorny plants known together as cacti. This family is almost exclusively from the American continent, which means they are endemic to the American continent and the Antilles Archipelago. However, there is an exception kamatis baccifera that is widespread in the tropics in the old world in: tropical Africa, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. It is believed that the emergence and colonization of the ancient world is relatively recent 400 years, by transporting seeds into the digestive tract of migratory birds, or according to another theory, in the form of plants stuck on trunks pushed by the sea currents.nnMany succulent plants, both in the old and new world, have a great resemblance to cacti and are often called cacti in common language. However, this is due to the parallel evolution, some succulent plants are not related to cacti. The clearest specific characteristic of cacti is Areola, a specialized structure where thorns, new buds and on many occasions flowers appear.nnIt is considered that these plants cacti evolved between 30 and 40 million years. The American continent was united with the other, but gradually separated in the process called the drift of continents. Endemic species in the new world have developed since the separation of continents; the maximum distance has been reached in the last 50 million years.
