Above the painting is a carving of the Madonna holding the infant Jesus. The Genoa Cathedral is also called la Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, it was consecrated in 1118 though construction was not completed until the 17th century. The striped exterior is a landmark feature of Genoa, northern Italy.
