Description

The Cauvery River after it has found its way through the rocks and ravines of the Deccan Plateau drops off to form the waterfalls. The island town of Shivasamudra divides the river into twin waterfalls, known as Gaganchukki Falls. This forms the western arm of the falls. Earlier, a few miles to the southwest, the river has already split to form the eastern arm of the falls, known as the Barachukki Falls. This is a segmented waterfall, where the water flow is broken into two or more channels before dropping over a cliff, resulting in multiple side by side waterfalls. It has an average width of 1,001 ft, a height of 322 ft, and an average volume of 33,000 cu ft/s. The maximum recorded volume is 667,000 cu ft/s.It is a perennial waterfall. However it is best viewed during the time of the southwest monsoon, between July and October, when the water flow is at its peak. The twin falls of Gaganchukki are best viewed from the Shivasamudra watch tower. The falls are located 86 miles from the city of Bangalore, in the state of Karnataka, India.Picture taken on September 13, 2019, around 6 PM, with a Canon DSLR EOS 550D, focal length 11 mm, f/5.6, shutter speed 1/200 sec.
