Agasthya Malai, or Agasthyakoodam, is in the southern tip of the Western Ghats of south India. This mountain range, known as the Ashambu hills, forms a natural border between the states of Tamilnadu and Kerala. Agasthyakoodam, the tallest of the 25 peaks in the mountain range, towers above 1868m. The forest around these hills is pristine natural forest, far from human settlements and rich in flora and fauna, including rare medicinal herbs. The trek to the peak takes one through varied terrain; moist deciduous forest, semi evergreen forest, grassland and finally dense evergreen forest. The final climb to the peak involves negotiating a steep rock face using ropes. nThe rock face of the cliff is shown in the photograph, with the dense evergreen forest in the foreground.
