In the foreground is part of the unmarked graves area where 5,000 unmarked graves have been archeologically verified. Next is the reinternment trench marking the area where over 1,000 remains were re-interred.Texas. Approximately 5,000 unmarked graves are in this location. The memorial is the work of American sculptor and artist David Newton, who was selected for the commission in a national competition. The Cemetery has been in existence since 1869 and the memorial was completed in 2000.
