Description
Temple of the Forty Sebastian Martyrs in the Spasskaya Sloboda of the Russian Orthodox Church.Presumably in the 16th century a wooden church stood on this site. In 1644-1645, a stone was erected to replace it. The temple was rebuilt several times.In 1812, the temple was plundered by Napoleonic soldiers. Abbot Peter Venyaminov managed to hide especially valuable church utensils and, even under severe torture, refused to give out the place of storage of the shrines. He was killed by the French. The martyrdom of the abbot of the temple was immortalized by a plaque on the wall of the temple.In 1993, the temple was transferred to the community of believers.
