Description
According to the Romanian folk legend, Bucharest was named after shepherd Bucur. In Romanian, this word means cheerful. It is not a very old city for European conditions, the first mention is from 1459. It is first mentioned in the charter of Prince Vlado Tepes. In 1465, the town became the winter residence of the Wallachian rulers and, since 1659, their residential town. The town became a crossroads of trade routes, but also a political, economic and spiritual center of the Principality of Wallachia. It was and is also the spiritual center of Romanian Orthodox Christians. After the unification of Wallachia and Moldova, it became the capital of the united Kingdom of Romania.
