Wenceslas Square is the main artery of Prague, the center of business and social life. It is 750 meters long and 50 meters wide. Wenceslas Square witnessed many important historical events. It is a traditional place for demonstrations, celebrations and other mass gatherings.It was founded by Karol IV. in 1348 as a link between the Old Town and New Town fortifications. The area soon became a large market place for the New Town, and as horse markets were regularly held in the upper part, it became the Horse Market. Since 1362, there have been held annual markets, traded in cloth, weapons but also in grain. In 1786 a wooden theater called Bouda was built in the lower part of the square. They played Czech games for three years. The shed was demolished as well as the two gates - Old Town Havel and New Town Horses. In 1879 a stone statue of St. Wenceslas from 1860 to Vysehrad. The square was paved at the end of the 18th century. In 1848 the name was changed to Wenceslas Square by Karel Havlíček Borovský. In 1875, the area was enriched with rows better, but already in 1884 had to retreat horse. The first electric lamps on the square lit up in 1894 and the `horse` was replaced by an electric track. Nowadays the tram only crosses the square.
