Description
The Equestrian Statue of Francis II Rakoczi is situated in the Kossuth Lajos Square, outside Hungarian Parliament Building. The six foot bronze equestrian statue of Rakoczi on a prancing horse stands on a 4.7 meter base of Swedish granite. It has the Rakoczi coat of arms on the front of the base, and inscriptions on each side. One side in English means `With God for Fatherland and Freedom`. The other side in English means `For the two hundred anniversary, erected by the Hungarian nation 1935`. Francis II Rakoczi, in Hungarian: II. Rakoczi Ferenc, was a Hungarian nobleman and leader of the Hungarian uprising against the Habsburgs in 1703 as the prince of the Estates Confederated for Liberty of the Kingdom of Hungary. He was also Prince of Transylvania, an Imperial Prince, and a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Today he is considered a national hero in Hungary. Budapest, Hungary, Europe.
