The iconic Broel Towers are the only remainders of Kortrijk`s oldest fortifications. The southern Ã¢â¬ËSpeytorreÃ¢â¬â¢ was built in 1385 to control shipping traffic on the River Lys and also formed part of the fortifications of the Counts of FlandersÃ¢â¬â¢ castle. The northern Ã¢â¬ËInghelburghtorreÃ¢â¬â¢ from 1415 served as an arms depot and was equipped with cannons..Both towers were built out of sandstone
