Orange and Black Banded Woolly Bear Caterpillar Closeup Detail #169303372
Description
Woolly bears are the caterpillar stage of medium sized moths known as tiger moths. This is an orange and black banded woolly bear caterpillar crawling across the pavement. The banded woolly bear is the species mentioned in winter-prediction folklore that claims longer the black at the ends of the body, the more severe will be the coming winter. It actually has to do with the age of the caterpillar, and moisture levels in its region, not the coming winter. Contact with the hairs of this caterpillar can cause irritation or a rash, so they are considered poisonous.
