Description
Hwaseong Fortress is a fortification made up of walls and structures that surrounded the city of Suwon in South Korea. This was built between 1794 and 1796 with a perimeter of 3.57 miles and a height of 13 to 20 feet. Hwaseong Fortress also includes Haenggung Palace which was used by kings and royal families of the Joseon Dynasty until 1897. The fortification was severely damaged during the Korean War but availability of extensive detailed records and plans of the initial work allowed for reconstruction work in the 1970`s. The fortress and enclosed palace are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
