Deoria Tal is a small mountain lake about 2.5 km uphill from Saari village. The path is well marked out and passes through dense forests and small meadows. Pony services are also available from the village if one doesn`t wish to walk up- but where`s the fun in that. We had planned our trip with Mr Heera Singh Negi, a near 60 yr old, sprightly man. He gave us a head start as he came with all the provisions for our stay, and as we huffed and puffed our way to the top, he was waiting there getting our lunch ready- traditionahichdi with sabzi and pickle. The lake itself is not too large- there is a nice trail around it and you can see lots of birds. But the highlight is the view - all the big peaks including Chaukhamba, Nilkantha, Bandarpunch, Kedar Range, Kalanag. It was breathtaking. It was a full moon night, so we couldn`t see a lot of stars initially, but we woke up around 4 AM, when the moon was no longer visible, and saw the milky way. The experience was amazing, made even better by Mr Negi`s delicious food and amusing anecdotes at dinner and breakfast time.
