Lake Pearson, with its fine trout fishing, lies on the main road between Christchurch and Arthur's Pass [where the road to Greymouth crosses the Southern Alps]. Early farmers burnt off the natural forest to provide grazing for their animals. The bare eroded hills with the fine light coloured upper surfaces - shingle slides - appear almost to be covered with snow even in the summer.
