In the center of Santiago is the historic hill of Santa Lucia with a medieval fortress on top 70 meters above the surrounding area and 629 meters above sea level. The hill is a remnant of a volcano 15 million years old. In 1872, a large-scale reconstruction of the hill was carried out. The rocky hill was decorated with fountains, rotundas, sculptures, towers and staircases, turning it into a landscape Park that became the hallmark of Santiago.
