Gyula section of the living water canal #178246186
Description
Part of the Living Water Canal is of natural origin, running in the former branches of Fehér-Körös, while the middle section, around Békéscsaba, is a man-made, artificial canal dug in 1777 by the citizens of Békéscsaba with public benefit work. In Gyula, the Fehér-Körös once flowed through, but in the 1850s the river was diverted into an artificial bed bypassing the city for safety reasons. Today, the old riverbed forms the Gyula section of the Living Water Canal, which always receives clean water from Fehér-Körös.
