The plumage of most of the body is bluish-gray, which allows the bird to hide from enemies in wooded areas. The back and undertail are somewhat darker, and the wings and belly are lighter. The wing tips are black. The front of the head, chin, upper neck and bridle are black or dark grey. The back of the head is bluish-grey. On the sides of the head there is a wide white stripe that begins under the eyes and then goes down along the neck. On the crown of the feathers are almost absent, and the area of bare skin looks like a red cap. The beak is light from 20-30 cm. Legs are black. In young cranes, the feathers on the head and neck are gray with red tips.
