Moss tower of Sumy prison in Kolomenskoye #180582405
Description
The moss tower of the Sumy prison is the only preserved wooden monument of defense architecture in Europe. The skill of the carpenters who created the Sumy prison was of such a high level that the wooden fortress withstood the `fire` battle. And now the logs of the moss tower show traces of Swedish buckshot, which was fired at the defenders of the fortress.nThe Kemsky, Kola, and Sumy prisons played an important role in the defense of the Western coast of the White sea against the Swedish invaders. In 1582-1583, for protection from the Swedes, the Solovetsky monastery at the expense of its budget built a wooden prison with six towers in Sumy Posad. Many times the defenders of the fortress successfully repelled the invaders ` attacks. Over time, the building became dilapidated and a century later, in 1680, the prison was rebuilt.nOf its six towers, only the moss tower has survived to our time. Thanks to the initiative of the Director of the Museum-reserve Pyotr Baranovsky and the historian Vladimir Ivanov, the monument was brought to Kolomenskoye and thus saved from final destruction and oblivion.nFor more than 80 years, the tower was disassembled in storage. In the early 2000s, thanks to the hard work of scientists and specialists, the moss tower was recreated. Currently, it houses an exhibition that tells about the lives of those who defended the prison, and You can also get acquainted with the military events that took place at that time.
