Borisov stone in Kolomenskoye #180586511
Description

One of the attractions of Kolomenskoye is Borisov stone, which belongs to the so-called Polotsk or Dvina stones. The cultural and historical significance of these boulders is huge, and the mystery of their purpose is still not fully solved.Borisov stones were found at the beginning of the XIX century, during the clearing of the bottom of the Northern Dvina river to improve navigation conditions. This stone was found in the upper reaches of the Northern Dvina river, the age of the find is more than 900 years. It is a huge boulder on which are carved the cross and the inscription `Colibri Christy`.In 1879, on behalf of the Russian archaeologist, corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences Alexey Sergeevich Uvarov, this block was with great difficulty transported to Moscow. Here it was exhibited in the Historical Museum, and in the 1920s it was brought to the Kolomenskoye Museum-reserve.The value of the label, `Colibri Christy` is interpreted in two ways. Some scholars translate it as `Strong, brave Boris Holy`, others believe that we are talking about some Calibre. This is one of the smallest artifacts found in the Northern part of Belarus in the Northern Dvina basin. In total, about ten such stones were found in this area. Some of them reached a height of several meters.
