Man with a mule and well salt in Nuodeng village, Yunnan, China. #180680465
Description
Photo taken in 2016. Nuodeng village located in Dali Bai Ethnic Group autonomous prefecture still practices 1,000-year-old technique of salt making. It was once a commercial center along the Ancient Tea Horse Road in western Yunnan province due to its salt industry. However, with the development of sea salt, the well salt of Nuodeng gradually faded out due to its high cost and complex production process. The prosperity of Nuodeng has gone, but the village still retains its traditional craftsmanship and uses it for making hams and pickles, or even artworks.
