Old English courtyard on Varvarka street in Moscow #180933819
Description
The chambers of the Old English court are the oldest civil structure in Moscow outside the Kremlin. They were built in the late XV-early XVI century and for a long time were the English residence in Moscow, the first official representation of another state in Russia. Their appearance combines the features of a warehouse of goods and a representative office. Now the Museum `Old English yard` a branch of the Museum of Moscow is open here, the exposition of which tells about the trade relations between Shakespeare`s England and Russia, concerts and various events are held. But all this might not have happened, if not for the persistence of the architect, restorer of monuments of ancient Russian architecture Peter Dmitrievich Baranovsky 1892-1984.Zaryadye is one of the oldest districts of Moscow, whose settlement began in the XII century. The name `Zaryadye` literally means `behind the [trade] rows` meaning the Lower trade rows that existed in the past. After the Kitay-Gorod wall was built in 1535-1538 under the project of the Italian architect Peter the Small, Zaryadye found itself inside it and gradually lost its commercial significance.Due to its proximity to the Kremlin, Zaryadye was inhabited by Russian and foreign merchants, artisans, and merchants. By the end of the XVII century, Varvarka became one of the most beautiful streets in Moscow.
