Pictured is the Griggs Park Memorial Plaza Obelisk in Uptown in Dallas, Texas. Griggs is a 7.4 acre neighborhood park established in 1915, owned and operated by Dallas Parks and Recreation. It is a memorial honoring Reverend Allen R. Griggs who was born a slave in Georgia in 1850, brought to Texas at age 9, and emancipated at age 15 on June 19, 1865. He became one of the most well-known and outstanding Baptist preachers of the nineteenth century. He organized four black colleges, two seminaries, one academy and over five hundred edifices of education and religion. The park was named in honor of his life`s work.
