This is the ` staircase ` leading to Watchtower No.3 of Mutianyu District. The bricks of the battlements are following the terrain - almost 90 degree incline. The Great Wall builders added sticky rice paste into the lime mortar, so that the bricks were stuck in place. And the sticky rice reacts with lime and becomes sticky rice concrete when it dries up - stronger than any modern cement. Sticky rice also serves as the binder so that the mortar can prevend erosion. That is why the vertical uperstrcture of the wall has stood there since 1404.
