The distinctive 85-metre span with its elliptical steel truss, described as a “bird’s nest” because of its interwoven girders, crosses the Arve River, connecting the city’s Vernets and Plainpalais neighbourhoods. In 2012, this futuristic bridge was built to replace the temporary bridge by the military in 1962. Officially called the Hans Wilsdorf Bridge after the founder of Rolex who financed the whole project. Due to its interlaced girders however it was coined the “bird nest” bridge. The design was conceived by architects Brodbeck & Roulet. It is recommended to cross this bridge at night as the interior red lighting poetically accentuates the elliptic rings and creates a magical optical contrast with the bluish tint of the exterior. Built in less than three years, the structure is held in place by 1,500 tonnes of steel and 1,500 tonnes of concrete. Geneva, Switzerland
