The old Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro, dedicated to our lady of mount Carmel is an old Carmelite Church that served as the Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro from about 1808 to 1976. It is one of the most important historical buildings in the city. The walls and ceiling are covered with richly decorated wood carvings in the Baroque style. The upper walls have a series of balconies and oval paintings of the apostles by artist Jose Leandro de Carvalho.
