Description
The Sun Temple, or Surya Mandir, which resembles a giant chariot of Sun God, with 12 pairs of highly ornamented wheels and drawn by seven pairs of horses, was built in the thirteenth century C.E. by King Narasimha Deva-I of the Ganga Dynasty. A remarkable piece of Kalinga architecture, much of the Temple now lies in ruins, vandalized over the centuries by invading Muslim hordes and by other natural causes. It is now preserved as an UNESCO World Heritage Center attracting a large number of tourists from all over the world.nPicture shows the beautiful carvings on the pillars of the Dance Hall platform, or Natya Mandir, with the Temple Tower seen in the background.
