The Sun Temple, or Surya Mandir, which resembles a giant chariot of Sun God, with 12 pairs of highly ornamented wheels and drawn by seven pairs of horses, was built in the thirteenth century C.E. by King Narasimha Deva-I of the Ganga Dynasty. A remarkable piece of Kalinga architecture, much of the Temple now lies in ruins, vandalized over the centuries by invading Muslim hordes and by other natural causes.
