The male northern cardinal, also know as a redbird or common cardinal, is a mid-sized songbird. As the feathers wear out the bird molts to replace them. This is done once per year. Both males and females have distinctive crests. The male is the state bird of several states. It is banned in the U. S. as a caged bird.
