Landscape in Rakatu Wetlands in New Zealand #188607709
Description
Rakatu Wetlands is a 270-hectare wetland restoration project on the South Island of New Zealand. They were officially opened on March 18, 2006.It is managed by Waiau Fisheries and the Wildlife Habitat Enhancement Trust. The Trust was established in 1996 to address the environmental impact of the construction of the Manapouri power plant. Because most of the natural flow of the Waiau River was diverted through the power plant and out to the sea, the ecological properties of the river and wetlands were changed due to the lower levels of the river.
