Modern Akhaltsikhe was founded at the beginning of the 12th century AD. From 1579 to 1829 the city belonged to the Ottoman Empire. Rabat fortress was built by the Turks, and recently it was restored. The architecture of the fortress is wonderful and unique, for the reason mentioned above it is significantly different from Georgian architecture. The towers of the fortress significantly rise above the Kura river valley. In the Middle Ages, from such towers watched trade caravans that passed along the river valley from China to Europe.
