Until the Middle Ages, the land which currently forms Plaza Nueva was occupied by an arm, which has since disappeared, of the Guadalquivir, which started approximately from the current Alamillo bridge and which, descending to the south, crossed the current Promenade d`Hercule, followed the route of Amor de Dios and Sierpes streets and went through what will become Plaza Nueva before jumping into the Guadalquivir near the Gold Tower
