The ancient dragon was primarily a horror and a symbol of rule. The Roman army adopted the Draco standard as a field symbol from the Parthians or Dacians. The emperor was entitled to the purple dragon flag; it was carried forward to him in battle and at celebrations. The Middle Ages continued this symbolism on flags, coats of arms, shields and helmets. The dragon was still used as an imperial animal by Maximilian I, and with the accession to the throne of the House of Tudor the golden dragon entered the coat of arms of Wales.
