Howrah BridgeÃÂ is aÃÂ bridgeÃÂ with aÃÂ suspended spanÃÂ over theÃÂ Hooghly RiverÃÂ inÃÂ West Bengal, India. Commissioned in 1943,[8][10]ÃÂ the bridge was originally named the New Howrah Bridge, because it replaced aÃÂ pontoon bridgeÃÂ at the same location linking the two cities ofÃÂ HowrahÃÂ andÃÂ KolkataÃÂ Calcutta. On 14 June 1965 it was renamedÃÂ Rabindra SetuÃÂ after the greatÃÂ BengaliÃÂ poetÃÂ Rabindranath Tagore, who was the first Indian and AsianÃÂ Nobel laureate.[10]ÃÂ It is still popularly known as the Howrah Bridge.
